Bandit Queen has been one of the cult classic films with critical acclaim for its story, direction and fine performances of all the actors. Directed by Shekhar Kapoor, the film is based on the true life of Phoolan Devi. The film was released in 1994 and kickstarted the Bollywood career of some of the best actors of Industry today.

Bandit Queen movie facts:
- Shehkhar Kapoor was doing a TV show when he was approached to make The Bandit Queen, the director agreed to do the film because it was supposed to be finished without 4-5 months and Kapoor wanted to do a fast feature film with no stars.
- Shekhar Kapoor hired most of the main actors of the film from National School Of Drama repertory.
- Saurabh Shukla (known for playing Judge in Jolly LLB) was one of the last actors to be cast in the film and Shekhar Kapoor wrote the role of Kailash just to have him in the film.
- Manoj Bajpai playing the role of Maan Singh was accompanied by real Maan Singh during the shoot.
- For a scene of Panchayat hearing in the film, it was the actor Gajraj Rao who (upon asking by Shekhar Kapoor) gave the suggestion of seating arrangements of lower and upper class people and Kapoor being a very humble and amazing filmmaker listened to it and made the changes on the sets.
- The film was selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 67th Academy Awards (Oscars).
