Tumbbad is based on a goddess of prosperity who is the symbol of infinite
‘gold and grain’. She gives birth to 160 million gods with one named ‘Hastar’
being greedy for the gold and grain. Upon stealing gold and going for grain
from the goddess, Hastar is attacted by it’s siblings but saved by the goddess
with one condition that he will not be worshiped as god forever.

Pankaj Kumar serving as the DOP of the film created magic and turned this
horror film into a piece of art. Huge sets of villages and cities
doppelgangers were built. Majority of the film was shot in monsoon with the
use of artificial rain here and there. The film’s mood and look heavily relies
on the rain and lighting which was brilliantly used by makers.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui was the first choice to play the main lead but as the
studios and producers backed out several times. The film was finally made when
Sohum Shah who also served as the producer came on board. -
The film was shot twice. First in 2012, the film was shot but Barve was
unsatisfied with the film and decided to shoot it again in 2015. -
Tumbbad’s budget was 5 crores, which was a huge amount for it’s multiple
producers and the film earned only about 13 crores.
